The Grunion: Memorial skateboard event in Long Beach hits 10 years

When 21-year-old Lakewood resident Jeffrey Dempsey, Jr.  died after a skateboard accident on a Long Beach street in 2011, his mom, Anitra Dempsey, went to Mike Donelon, founder of Action Sports Kids, to help promote safe skateboarding.

The result was the Jeffrey Dempsey Jr. Memorial AM/JAM competition. The event will return Saturday, Aug. 7, for the 10th annual edition, complete with multiple major sponsors, several skateboard contests, food, drawings and a short program. The event will be at Houghton Skate Park, 601-723 Harding St.

“More than 85% of skateboarding deaths occur in the streets,” Donelon said in an email. “Skate parks offer a safe and legal place for kids to enjoy their sport. So that is how it started and (is) promoted.”
